Vendor Spotlight: Kathy G & Company

JAMM is so very lucky to have so many great event vendors in our area that we have the privilege of working with regularly.  We’d like to highlight the gifts and talents of Kathy G and her staff.

jammkathygmezrano

Owner, Kathy Mezrano says she sort of fell into the catering business.  Growing up in a family who loved to cook, Kathy’s father worked in wholesale produce, and her family dining room was the center piece of their lives.  After a particularly successful birthday party catered and hosted by Kathy, her catering business was born over 20 years ago.

When asked about what sets Kathy G apart, she reminds us that great food is always the goal and is proud that her company has developed a reputation for immaculate presentation.  The old saying that we eat with our eyes first has certainly spelled success for this group.  They were voted Best of Birmingham 2012 with Best new Hors d’oerves and Best Presentation.  Kathy G has also been awarded the ISES Awards in Atlanta for catering and design as well as the CATIE award from ICA.

jammkathygconradwedding

A large part of Kathy G’s Birmingham business consists of weddings.  According to Kathy, brides should do their homework when selecting a caterer for their special day to avoid pitfalls.  The bride should make sure the caterer they select is insured, health department approved and liscenced before getting roped into paying penalties for non-compliance with venues later.  You also want to make sure you’re comparing apples to apples when shopping for the right caterer.  The price from one caterer might be lower because it doesn’t include the set up fee, cleaning or even serving materials (like plates).  Compare before you sign.  Customization is also important in weddings and a good caterer should want to know what you want and like to eat and be able to make that happen for what you’d like to spend.  Any budget and culinary taste can be achieved with a willing team, and Kathy G wants the food to be your favorite wedding element.

Best Sweet 16 Birthday Party Ever

You have waited for 15 years and the big event is right around the corner.  Time for your Sweet 16 birthday party!  You want this to be the Best. Party. Ever.  JAMM Entertainment can help!

A great theme is the key to a great event.  Think about the parties you remember or the celebrations you’ve seen on television.  The best parties have a central theme that helps bring everything together including decorations, food and entertainment.  Your theme should represent who you are or the message you want to convey.  Let’s take a look at a few ideas.

Dance Party

With the right entertainment, the dance party can be the best of all the party themes.  You only have one Sweet Sixteen birthday , so it should be done right.  Dances allow you to throw your own party with a more mature feel.  By selecting the right music and lighting you can have a night club setting without the night club or an 70′s blowout that will make your bell bottoms shake.  You can have a blast with all of your closest friends while music videos are playing on a video screen display behind you.  Let one of our experienced DJs keep the party going all night by assisting with the right music, lighting, games and contests.  You and your parents won’t have to spend a minute worrying about the entertainment.  Just show up and dance with all of your friends!

Rocking the 80s

Who doesn’t love the 80s?  Your guests can dress up in their favorite 80s attire like leg warmers, head bands, denim jackets and heavy metal hair dos and rock out to the 80s greatest hits.  Don’t feel like sweating to the oldies?  Don’t worry.  Our digital graffiti wall will keep you and your guests entertained for hours.  JAMM can even save your pictures on a DVD so you and your guests can enjoy them later.

Digital Graffiti Wall

Guitar Hero

Unleash your inner rock star with a Guitar Hero party.   Our experts can take your video game and connect it to multiple video screen display and our professional sound system.  Have your guests dress up like a rock star, manager, groupie, crazy fan or someone in the music industry.  You can have a tournament to determine the best player and award themed prizes.  It’s time to take the video game fun out of the basement and show off your skills.

Gaming Station for Guitar Hero

Costume Party

A well planned costume party is a guarantee of fun and a great photo opportunity.  Don’t worry.  We’ll be there to capture the moment with our Foto Factory.  The conversation won’t lag and the laughs will be loud with each guest’s arrival.  Instead of a traditional costume party where guests wear whatever they like, try hosting a theme costume party, where you pick a theme and then tell your guests the type of costume you’d like them to wear. You can have everyone dress up as their favorite star from a television show, band, or movie.

Why Every Bride Should Hire A Wedding Planner

As a newly engaged couple, planning out an entire wedding can be overwhelming.  Where do you start?  How do you plan?  What should you do first?

JAMM Entertainment has the honor and privilege of working with some of the best vendors in the state.  We spoke with several wedding planners to find out what advice every newly engaged couple should have and this is what we discovered.

Birmingham Wedding Planners

Hire A Planner

Every planner we spoke with encouraged the couple to hire a planner but why? For most newly engaged couples, this is the first wedding you have planned and you don’t know where to begin.  “Of course brides can absolutely plan their own weddings, however does she really want to be a “wedding planner” on the day of her wedding or does she want to be what she has always dreamed of for that day……a bride!?   My goal as a wedding planner is to allow the bride to relax and enjoy this day with out stress or worry and be able to enjoy her time with her best girls (bridesmaids) and family and friends.  There are many elements going on behind the scenes and a wedding planner acts as the “production assistant” for that day  and will be extremely invaluable,” says Anita Kanellis with AK Brides.

Alene Gamel of I Do I Do! Wedding Planning says, “A planner can help relieve stress during the planning process by keeping you on track, giving you loads of excellent advice, and direct you to the best vendors for you. Think of your planner as sister, mom, best friend, personal assistant, designer, and therapist all rolled into one! And, on wedding day, she is there to make sure you have the best day of your life!”

“By becoming a confidential sounding board, a planner provides countless etiquette advice to address ways to avoid awkward or embarrassing situations. This allows couples to be appear sincere and thoughtful to their friends and family. And finally, planners provide a detailed course of action to guide their clients through the entire planning process allowing this time to be almost as much fun as the wedding day itself, states Rachael Grammer of Two Hearts Weddings and Events.

Anita Kanellis AK Brides

Have a Plan B

No matter how much planning goes into your big day, occasionally, things go wrong.  Will it rain for your outdoor wedding?  Will your estranged sister and aunt get along?  Anything can happen so it is critical to have a backup plan or a Plan B.

Rachael Grammer says, “Planners are the eyes, ears, and hands of the couple on their wedding day. They are the producer and director of the wedding day production. This allows them to address and correct any complications that arise during the setup and execution of the day. They are also very capable of switching to Plan B when extreme circumstances dictate doing so. By knowing their clients’ wants and wishes for their wedding day, planners know how to advise vendors to correct situations without even having to interrupt a couple during their blissful time of getting ready to say “I Do”.”

Rachael Grammer Two Hearts Weddings and Events

Have a Budget

You won’t know where to start until you know how much money you have to work with.  “Set a realistic budget and decide what works for you, ( average wedding in the state is about 19,000,  average wedding in the country 27,000) by talking  with all parents, and figure out what you have to work with. Budget determines everything:  venue, vendors, dress, decor, food, etc, and you won’t  know what you can do without a good budget. Then break it down and get a budget planner,” says Alene Gamel.

Rachael Grammer says, “Planners spend an extraordinary amount of time honing their craft with continuing education, networking with experienced, reputable vendors, and keeping abreast of all the latest styles and trends and best practices of handling events. What this translates too is extremely valuable advice to help couples avoid costly and time-consuming mistakes. Items that fall within this advice for example are what they need to know to establish a realistic budget. Along with this comes recommendations of vendors who are able to work within those limits… a huge time and money saver!”

Alene Gamel I Do I Do Wedding Planning

Selecting Other Vendors

“Wedding planners have already formed personal relationships with vendors in and around the city as well as the entire state and country so in most cases, a lot of footwork has already been done with the planners experience and how long she has been in business.  An experienced wedding planner may also have access to vendor discounts since planners work so closely with vendors throughout the year,” says Anita Kanellis.

Hiring a planner might be the most beneficial, stress-reducing, time and money saving thing you do for your wedding.   While you can always plan and execute everything yourself, ask yourself, ‘Do I really want to be busy with the details instead of enjoying my big day?’  And remember these sound words from Anita Kanellis, “I have never met a bride who regretted having a wedding planner, but  I have met several brides who WISHED they had a wedding planner.”

Why Team Building Is Important

Why is team building important to a successful organization culture?

The progress of a company relies on good leadership and manpower.  It can never be accomplished by a single person.  Most companies include team building as part of their strategy and setup because it has been proven effective in the past.  The main purpose of team building is to empower the employees in fulfilling their task effectively in a timely manner while communicating with other workers efficiently. You may have heard of some organizations success because of concerted team efforts, but have you ever experienced it?

Minute Win It Jamm

Vendor Highlight: Rare Transportation

JAMM is pleased to have the opportunity to spotlight our friends at Rare Transportation this month.

Joel and Joyce Dabbs purchased Rare Transportation in 2009 to accompany their other business, APEX Valet.  Rare Transportation specializes in Group Transportation for the entire state of Alabama.  Their fleet consists of 25 passenger minibuses and 35 passenger midbuses.  Their experienced drivers are always on time and professional.  Their services are available for any special occasion, corporate event, group outing and more.

Rare Transportation

We were able to speak with Joyce Dabbs to ask the following questions:

What should someone hiring a transportation company remember to ask?

Do you have correct licenses required for the city and state?  Can I see your insurance certificate?  How to do your drivers receive event itinerary?  “This is especially important because we found that almost 80% of persons applying to driver positions don’t actually know their way around Birmingham and outlying areas,”  says Joyce.

What are the likely results from not hiring the right transportation company?

According to Joyce, when you choose price over quality, you will likely experience drivers who are late or don’t show, or aren’t familiar with the itinerary and leave people behind.

Thank you, Joyce Dabbs for taking time to share about your business.  JAMM is thankful for the privilege of working with such dedicated professionals.  Need assistance with your next special event?  Contact Jamm Entertainment at (205) 856-5266.

What makes MSP stand out from other videographers in the market?“We’re really interested in telling each couple’s story in a unique way.  We try to get to know as much about our couples in advance of the wedding as possible-this helps them to relax so we can capture all those tear-jerking moments on wedding day without them feeling like we’re outsiders,”  says Angela.

How should brides go about selecting a videographer?“It’s important for couples to take the time to find a committed professional who can relay in a video the emotion and feeling of one of the biggest days in their lives.  It takes practice and skill to capture a certain moment. It’s very difficult unless you know what you are looking for,” says John.

Jamm is thrilled to be a part of an industry and market full of so many noteworthy professionals.  Thanks to Main Street Productions!

How to Have a Successful Bridal Show Experience

Typically, January and August are the peak for most markets to gather industry vendors together for bridal shows enticing brides at all stages of planning to see the latest and greatest in what’s available for their upcoming weddings.  However, if you’ve attended more than one of these things, you know first hand how overwhelming they can be.  After participating in many shows over the years, we would like to help you to get the most out of your next bridal show with the following tips for success.

JAMM at Southern Bridal Show

1.  Make sure you pre-register your attendance.  Show producers often extend discounts to pre-registered attendees, and you’ll also be alerted of show schedules and changes when you’re on the right list.
2. Do your research.  No matter if you’ve been engaged for a month or a year, make the most of your time by researching which vendors in your desired categories will be exhibiting and make plans to see them specifically.  Vendors often run show specials or offer discounts for booking at or shortly after a bridal show.
3.  Make sure you bring a list of questions.  Large shows especially will attract crowds from outlying areas and when you have to wait to speak to someone, you may forget to ask something that will make your decisions much easier.  Being prepared will pay off.
4. Avoid writers cramp by pre-printing labels with your name, address, contact info and wedding date on them.  Many booths will feature drawings for prizes of some type, and having pre-printed labels will insure that you can sign up for all of them quickly.
5.  Bring your planner or online calendar.  Without fail, you will find yourself running out of time to accomplish everything at a bridal show.  Use booth time to make appointments to meet one on one with the vendors you have particular interest in.

Our software gives you the tools to turn your events into fun, profit maximizing parties! It allows your clients to send text messages to a designated telephone number and then have them projected onto a large screen at your event. Cool Text features also allow you to simultaneously build a database of user phone numbers! This strategic way of collecting information allows you to alert your customers of exclusive events and giveaways. We can also customize cool backgrounds to fit your event theme.

There are several options when using Cool Text:

Text to Screen
Allow your clients to send text messages to the screens in your venue. Choose from LCD or rear     projection screen.  During a show, this feature is a great way to broadcast what’s going on at your  booth.

Text Message Voting
CoolText’s voting system is the easiest way to collect votes for beauty pageants and contests! All participants do is text a keyword to CoolText and it automatically tallies votes. Results can be     displayed live on screens or can be saved for the end of the event.

By texting in a keyword to CoolText, customers will automatically be entered into your draw!     Our software randomly selects a winner and texts a unique digital ID code (which cannot be reproduced) straight to their cell phone. Bulk text messages and advertisements can be sent out     at any time with no printing costs!  This feature can be used both during and after a trade show to     help select and notify show special contest winners.

Bulk Text Messaging
After using CoolText and compiling a database of phone numbers, bulk messages and alerts can     be sent out at anytime with no cost.  After a trade show, texting potential clients can ofter garner a     greater response than unreturned calls or email blasts.  Try it out!

Plan the Perfect Prom in 2013

It’s hard to believe that not only is 2013 less that 2 weeks away, but that its time to plan for Prom. Yes, already. The dates have been set, the venues are booked, and although dresses may not have been bought yet, its definitely time to reserve entertainers.

Whether, your Prom has a specific theme or you just want to set yourself apart by being the best party in town, the following 3 things will start you in the right direction: Professional Entertainers, Unique Lighting, and Awesome Extras.

Professional Entertainers will serve as upbeat hosts of your Prom, accepting student requests that keep the party going while making sure their playlists are edited to comply with school rules. Professional DJ’s and Emcees know how to set your Prom apart from last year’s with personalized extras like scripted prom court intros and song selections that may be special to certain student and faculty groups.

Unique Lighting is the key ingredient to creating your Prom’s desired atmosphere. Lighting effects like Intelligent Lighting and Hazers will set your dance floor space apart from the other party areas. Custom GOBOs can be used to enhance a theme and/or personalize the event.

The use of awesome entertainment extra items give students alternative activities to participate in when not on the dancefloor. Gaming stations, Photo Booths, and other interactive areas like our Grafitti Wall keep students at the Prom longer by breaking up the evening.

If you need help planning your prom this year, please call our experienced staff at 205-856-5266.  Happy Planning!
